| bobbers15 | Subject: $5600 of repairs on a 2000 Toyota?!! Help me! | |
Posted on: 03/13/2006 10:44 PM | My dealer mechanic recently told me that my car was burning
oil and that it needed $5600 worth of repairs. I have
gotten my oil changed religiously since I bought the car a
year and a half ago, and my warranty just ran out a few
months ago... When I asked him why they never said anything
about the car being low before, he told me "we don't check
it, we just change it." Is it really possible for a
problem like this to develop overnight, like he's claiming?
What should I do with the car? Do I have any legal
recourse here? I have asked about oil leaks in the past,
although I never asked about an "oil consumption problem",
which, according to my mechanic, is the phrase I should
have used. Any advice anybody has would be great. |

Dealer? |

Posted on: 05/06/2006 06:05 PM | I say go get another opinion or two. I have a rule of three
(talk to or call three different mechanics for quotes) when
I need work done, especially if it is something that isn't
obvious what the problem is. Did he tell you exactly what
was wrong? Did he say if you don't get the work done, the
engine would fall out? Lastly, was the car giving you any
kinds of problems, or did he just come up with this on his
own. It all sounds really fishy to me. |

I'm puzzled when you say you've "...oil changed
religiously since I bought the car a year and a half ago".
I agree that such a history should not result in a $5600
bill. Getting another oinion is a good idea. On the
downside, your car make is notorious for sludging but if
you've been changing it as recommended with good oil, you
should not be having this happen to you.
I personally use and recommend Amsoil XL product options
for any Toyota, which include superior Ea air and oil
filters. |
