Yet the urban warrior will find a full array of creature comforts, and while Spartan, the interior is luxurious. The H2 has excellent road manners and wind noise is absent, both great improvements over its big brother. The tires were chosen for appearance and size, and are fully off road capable with thick, three ply sidewalls, yet the vehicle has little harshness on the highway. Rear seat access suffers from the same design flaws as all big GM SUVs, but once inside it is adequate in the rear, although most of the rear storage is filled with the full size spare.

Two option packages will be offered with the H2. Priced at $2,575, the Lux Series includes AM/FM radio with 6-disc CD changer, heated leather front seats, chrome appearance package, tubular assist steps, and custom carpet floor mats. The Adventure Series, priced at $2,215, includes an air suspension package, brush guard, first aid kit, tool kit and portable lamp, 6-disc CD changer, roof rack crossbars, and custom carpet floor mats. Additional options include wrap around brush grille guard, off-road roof spot lamps, off-road grille guard spot lamps, tubular tail lamp covers, hard cargo carrier, removable U-steps, tubular assist steps, and custom carpet floor mats and cargo mat.

There will be about 150 dealers in when the H2 goes on sale in July 2002, with somewhere around 225 eventually. These are selected from the existing group of GM dealers with an emphasis on the ability to service this unique-to-GM product. GM kept only about 1/3 of original AMG Hummer dealers since most were heavy equipment oriented, not with any consumer focus needed for road vehicles. H2 will be sold exclusively in the United States and Canada. Seven colors including pewter metallic, black, yellow, sage green metallic, white, sunset orange metallic, and red metallic will be available.

A Strange Past And A Curious Future Awaits HumVee Projects

Actually, the Humvee started as a military Jeep replacement project by American Motors before that company was bought by Chrysler. When military contract efforts fell out of favor with Wall Street analysts, the Humvee project was spun off to independent AM General, which took the project through the 90s and created the rugged but user unfriendly Hummer civil version. With its high price, monstrous size, and awkward diesel engine, only about a thousand are sold each year.
