Now General Motors has contracted with AMG for the civilian rights and distribution and then pulled an "in your face" move with the H2. The Jeep brand is one of the most fiercely protected jewels in the Chrysler crown, and perhaps the most distinctive Jeep element is its brush rugged seven-slot grille. It was an obviously appropriate functional design item to incorporate in the Humvee when it was part of the Jeep family, and when the AMG firm sold a few civilian copies, no one got upset. But now when a rival comes up with a new and different consumer version that echoes the same trade marked look and that usurper has the potential of 40,000 units a year, DaimlerChrysler cried foul! The current court decision allows GM to start production, but don't think this is over.

And then with all the discussion about fuel economy and pollution dominating the civilian truck headlines, the military is gaining some of the fallout technology benefit. The warriors think that Humvee hybrids may be capable of sneaking up on an enemy with virtually no exhaust note or less chance of making noise. AM General, maker of the Humvee, is reported to be working on a diesel-electric hybrid version. The program, sponsored by the Army Tank, Automotive and Armament Command (TACOM) is interested in developing a tactical truck that could be used in selected situations as a support vehicle.

AM General produces between 3,000 and 6,000 military Humvees a year at its plant in Mishawaka, MI.

Pros: No one will miss you. You will feel powerful, sexy and invincible.

Cons: You will not actually be powerful, sexy and invincible. This is a vehicle no one needs to own. What the vehicle actually says about its owner is that they are inconsiderate, irresponsible and very likely obnoxious. Unlike a GM Suburban or a Ford Explorer, there is nothing at all practical or useful about this vehicle. It's pure ego. Think carefully about buying one.
