Traction

Sticking to the ground or getting a grip on the road. If you don't have traction when you are driving, your wheels are just spinning. Your tires won't be transferring the car's power to the road and you won't get the full benefit of the work the engine in doing. If you completely lose traction (like on water) you won't be able to steer the car in the direction you want it to go.
