The 2008 Acura MDX sport utility vehicle (SUV) is the largest of the automaker's two luxury SUV products. The Acura MDX is available in five trim levels: Base (MSRP $40,195), Base with Technology Package (MSRP $43,695), Base with Sport Package (MSRP $45,795), Base with Technology, Entertainment Package (MSRP $45,895), and Base with Sport, Entertainment Package (MSRP $47,995). It competes with the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Buick Enclave, Infiniti FX 35, and 45, Lexus GX 470, Lexus RX 350, Mazda CX-9, Mercedes-Benz M Class, Porsche Cayenne, Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Touareg 2, and the Volvo XC90. All trim levels are available with a 300-horsepower, 3.7-liter V6 engine and drive train features like an all-wheel drive system, five-speed shiftable automatic transmission, mechanical center differential, and center and rear limited slip differential.
The Acura MDX is currently in its second generation, first produced in 2001 and currently being manufactured by Honda of Canada Manufacturing, Ltd. It received the following awards in 2001: North American Truck of the Year, Motor Trend's Sport Utility of the Year, and Car and Driver magazine's Best Luxury SUV.
Basic Acura MDX features include front and rear stabilizer bars, multi-link rear suspension, trip computer, four-wheel independent suspension, external temperature display, MacPherson strut front suspension, tachometer, low fuel level warning, all-season tires, inside-mounted steel spare tire, power glass sunroof, variably intermittent wipers, intermittent rear wiper, privacy glass, rear defogger, rear spoiler, fixed liftgate window, and rear liftgate door.
Comfort and convenience features in the MDX include seven-person total seating capacity, sport front seats, leather upholstery, height-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, multi-level heating for the driver and front passenger seats, eight-way power driver and front passenger seats, driver's seat with power adjustable lumbar support, reclining rear seats, rear ventilation ducts with fan control. There are also power windows and mirrors, heated mirrors, reverse-tilt dual mirrors (provides curb view when vehicle is in reverse), cruise control, front, rear- and third-row cup holders, speed-proportional power steering, audio and cruise controls on the steering wheel, universal remote transmitter (for garage door, security system, etc.), front seat back and front and overhead console with storage, three-zone climate control, interior active charcoal air filter, electrochromatic inside rear view mirror, front and rear reading lights, dual illuminating vanity mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather trim shift knob, simulated wood trim on the doors, dash, and center console, and memorized settings for two drivers (which include the settings for the driver's seat, steering wheel, and exterior mirrors).
Entertainment and telematics features in the Acura MDX include AM/FM in-dash 6 CD player with CD MP3 Playback stereo, 253 watt stereo output, eight speakers, diversity antenna, XM satellite radio, one subwoofer, auxiliary MP3 audio input, speed-sensitive volume control, pre-wiring for a cell phone, and a Bluetooth wireless data link for a hands-free phone.
Additional MDX features for the Base with Technology Package and trim level include a compass, premium leather upholstery, AM/FM in-dash 6 CD/DVD with CD MP3 Playback stereo, ten speakers, 410 watt stereo output, 5.1 surround audio (discrete), DVD navigation system with voice activation, satellite communications telecommunication service, XM with NavTraffic satellite radio, Bluetooth wireless data link for the navigation system, and real-time traffic reporting.
Additional features for the Acura MDX Base with Sport Package trim level include a compass, premium leather upholstery, simulated alloy trim on the dash and doors, alloy and leather trim on the center console, and the same entertainment and telematics features included in the Base with Technology Package trim level.
Additional features for the Acura MDX Base with Technology, Entertainment Package trim level include a compass, heated rear seats, premium leather upholstery, and the same entertainment and telematics features included in the Base with Technology Package trim level, plus separate rear audio, rear headsets, video monitor, DVD player, audio/video input, and an audio and video remote control.
Additional features for the Acura MDX Base with Sport, Entertainment Package include active suspension, heated rear seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, simulated alloy trim on dash, alloy and leather trim on center console, simulated wood trim on the doors, and the same entertainment and telematics features found in the Base with Technology, Entertainment Package trim level.
Acura MDX safety features include height-adjustable front (two), rear (three), and third row (two) headrests, dusk-sensing headlamps, engine immobilizer, driver and passenger head restraint whiplash protection system, xenon high intensity discharge headlamps, front fog/driving lights, remote anti-theft alarm system, daytime running lights, tire-pressure monitoring, rear center 3-point seatbelt, rear door child safety locks and seat anchors, front seatbelt pretensioners, front, rear and third row head airbags, dual front side-mounted airbags, ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes, 4-wheel Antilock Braking System, passenger airbag occupant-sensing deactivation, stability control, emergency braking assist, and traction control.
A safety report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that the 2008 Acura MDX SUV received five stars out of five in frontal and side crash tests, and four stars out of five in rollover tests.[1]
A reliability history report from ComsumerReports.org showed the Acura MDX SUV held up well mechanically. The Acura MDX received the following ratings for the year 2007: excellent ratings for its engine, transmission, drive, fuel, electrical, and climate systems, brakes, exhaust, and paint and trim, very good ratings for its suspension, body hardware, power equipment, and squeaks and rattles, and good ratings for its audio system.[2]
