The 2008 Audi A4 compact, luxury sports sedan is a fun-to-drive, sexy daily driver. It is available as a sedan, wagon or convertible. The 2008 A4 sedan version competes with the BMW 3 Series, the Lexus IS, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Volvo S60. The 2008 A4 Avant wagon competes with the BMW 3 Series, the Jaguar X-Type, the Saab 9-3, and the 2008 Volvo V50. The 2008 A4 Cabriolet convertible version competes with the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz CLK, the Saab 9-3, and the Volvo C70.
All Audi A4s are available with two engine options. One is the standard 200-horsepower, turbocharged, 2-liter, 4-cylinder 2.0T and the other is a 255-horsepower, 3.2-liter V6 engine. There are three transmission options for the A4 including the standard 6-speed manual, a multitronic automatic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and a Tiptronic automatic. All three are available on both the A4 sedan and wagon. The convertible is available only with the automatic transmissions. The automatics are both available with, very cool and fun to use, paddle shifters. While front-wheel drive is standard for all three versions, the A4 is also available with Audi's excellent "quattro" all-wheel drive system.
MSRP pricing for the Audi A4 sedan falls between $28,900 and $38,400. The A4 Avant wagon runs between $32,000 and $39,400. The A4 cabriolet convertible will cost between $39,750 and $47,900. Audis generally cost a bit less than BMWs and Mercedes-Benz products, and a little more than Volvos. The price of a base model A4 2.0T sedan is competitive with the top version of the Toyota Camry. A4s are a good value and their designs are excellent.
For people who want an ultra high-performance version of the A4, Audi makes the S4 and the RS4 variants. The S4 sedan, Avant wagon and cabriolet come with a 340-horsepower, 4.2-liter, V8 engine with either the 6-speed manual or Tiptronic automatic transmissions and quattro is standard. The RS4 is available as a sedan or convertible, with a 420-horsepower, 4.2-liter V8 engine. The 6-speed manual transmission and quattro are standard. The S4s have MSRPs that run from $48,600 for the sedan, to $56,800 for the convertible. The RS4 sedan goes for $66,900 MSRP.
Audi debuted their new Tiptronic transmission on the first generation A4s way back in 1995. Since then, it has undergone engine and interior expansions to evolve into the present third generation A4 series, which was launched in late 2004.
Audi A4 trim levels are tied to the engine size and accessories can be added to customize them. All include basic features such as four-wheel independent suspension, front and rear anti-roll bars, power and speed-sensitive steering, with an option to include the sports suspension as well. Exteriors come with standard power and heated door mirrors and body side molding. All types are also equipped with BOSE speakers, Bluetooth, AM/FM radio, a diversity antenna, single CD player, first-row LCD monitors and MP3 capability. The A4 convertible 3.2 quattro, however, is the only one with genuine-wood dashboard, door panel, and console inserts included among the basic features.
All Audi A4 versions have similar safety features including driver front and side, passenger front and side impact airbags. Rear side impact airbags are optional on the sedan and wagon. Knee airbags are available only on the cabriolet.
NHTSA's safety reporting showed good overall ratings for the 2008 Audi A4 (cabriolet not included in testing). [1] A reliability history report from ConsumerReports.org [2] for 2007 reflected favorable results since the A4 was redesigned in 2002, with excellent to very good ratings for wear-and-tear on its engine, transmission, drive, fuel, and electrical systems.
