The 2008 BMW 7 Series full-size luxury sedan is the brand's flagship and considered one of the finest luxury cars in the world. The company introduced a hydrogen-powered version a few years ago, in conjunction with British Petroleum. The two companies are looking to the future of vehicle fuel options. BMW is certainly attempting to keep large luxury sedans relevant, making sure that they can be fueled in the future.

The 2008 BMW 7 Series is available in three trim levels, with an additional, more-exclusive model called the BMW Alpina B7. The 750i (MSRP $75,800) and 750Li (MSRP $78,900) trim levels compete with the Audi A8 L, Cadillac STS V8, Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas, Jaguar XJR, Lexus LS 460 L, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class S550. The 760Li trim level (MSRP $122,600) competes with the Audi A8 L W12, Bentley Continental Flying Spur, Jaguar XJ8 Super V8, Lexus LS 460 L, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class S600. All three are available with the six-speed Steptronic manual-shift automatic transmission system, and rear-wheel drive system. The 750i and 750Li come with a 360-horsepower, 4.8-liter V8 engine, while the 760Li comes with a 438-horsepower, 6.0-liter V12 engine.

Basic suspension and handling features include adaptive suspension, four-wheel independent suspension, front and rear anti-roll bars, alloy wheels, and power-dependent and speed-sensing steering. Sport and auto-leveling suspension are optional on the 750i and 750Li but standard on the 760Li.

Convenience, seats and trim features include residual heat circulation, power moonroof, memory seat, steering wheel and head restraints memory, speed control, remote keyless and illuminated entry, telescoping, tilt, and auto tilt-away steering wheel, auto dimming rear view mirror, driver vanity mirror, power trunk closing assist, global positioning system (GPS) with voice activation, garage door transmitter, BMW Assist roadside assistance, power driver and passenger seats, four-way power driver and passenger lumbar support, heated front seats, leather upholstery and steering wheel, and genuine wood dashboard, door panel, and console inserts. Heated rear seats and ventilated front and rear seats are optional on the 750i and 750Li but standard on the 760Li. A sport steering wheel is optional on the 750i and 750Li. Distance pacing cruise control is optional on all trim levels.

Entertainment features include a single-disc CD player, AM/FM/Satellite-capable radio, six-disc remote CD player, weather band radio, ten harman/kardon speakers, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, entertainment system with DVD, and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

Lighting, visibility, safety, and security features include high-intensity discharge and delay-off headlights, headlight cleaning feature, variably intermittent and rain-sensing wipers, front and rear reverse-sensing system, low tire pressure warning indicator, rear window defroster, tachometer, trip computer, outside temperature display, driver and passenger front and rear power-adjustable tilting head restraints, traction control, security system, panic alarm, electronic stability control, brake assist, perimeter/approach lights, hill hold feature, and occupant-sensing airbags (driver and passenger front, side, overhead, and knee impact). Night vision headlights and rear side impact airbags are optional on all trim levels.

A reliability history report from ConsumerReports.org (2007) showed that the BMW 7 Series received excellent ratings for its engine, transmission, drive, electrical, and climate system, suspension, brakes, exhaust, and paint and trim, very good ratings for its fuel system and squeaks and rattles, fair ratings for its audio system, and poor ratings for its body hardware and power equipment. The BMW 7 Series was introduced in 1977 and is currently on its fourth generation. The current generation was styled by Chris Bangle, and is expected to undergo its next redesign in 2008, with the updated model to be sold in 2009.
