The 2008 BMW 6 Series 650i is an elegant passenger car that has a classic design that is perhaps as important as a Duesenberg, Cord, Auburn, or Packard from the 1920s and 1930s. These "modern classic" mid-size cars are available in coupe (MSRP $74,700) and convertible (MSRP $81,700) versions. The coupe version competes with the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Audi A5, Cadillac XLR, Jaguar XK Coupe, Lexus SC, and Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class and CL-Class. The convertible version competes with the Chevrolet Corvette, Jaguar XK convertible, and Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Cabriolet. It comes with a 360-horsepower, 4.8-liter V8 engine, a 6-speed manual or Steptronic manual-shift automatic transmission system, and rear-wheel drive system.
All versions can be customized with a variety of packages and accessories. Basic features include four-wheel independent suspension, speed and power-sensing steering, front and rear anti-roll bar, sport suspension, residual heat circulation, power moonroof (for the coupe version), memory seat, steering wheel memory, remote keyless entry, distance pacing cruise control, tilt and telescoping, heated, and auto tilt-away steering wheel, speed control, illuminated entry, auto-dimming rear view mirror, garage door transmitter, BMW Assist roadside assistance, leather shift knob, leather steering wheel, global positioning system (GPS) with voice activation, sport steering wheel, and leather upholstery. Optional features include genuine wood dashboard, door panel, and wood console inserts, heated front seats, and rear center armrest.
Entertainment features include AM/FM/Satellite-capable radio, single CD player with MP3 capability, eight harman/kardon speakers, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, weather band radio, radio data system, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
Lighting, visibility, safety and security features include a trip computer, reverse-sensing system (front and rear), low tire pressure warning, tachometer, outside temperature display, rain-sensing wipers, rear window defroster, high intensity discharge headlights, headlight cleaning feature, brake assist, traction control, driver and passenger adjustable head restraints, ignition disable, perimeter and approach lights, security system, panic alarm, occupant sensing airbags (driver and passenger front and side, overhead, knee impact), and variably intermittent wipers.
Optional features include heads-up display and night vision lights.
A reliability history report from ConsumerReports.org (2006) showed that the BMW 6 Series received very good to excellent ratings for its engine, excellent ratings for its transmission, fuel, electrical, and climate system, exhaust, paint and trim, and squeaks and rattles, good ratings for it suspension, brakes, and power equipment, fair ratings for its drive system, and poor ratings for its body hardware and audio system.[1]
The BMW 6 Series is currently in its second generation. It was first launched in August 1976, and was introduced to the US market in 1977. It was out of production for many years returning with the current version in 2004.
