The 2008 Cadillac SRX Crossover mid-size, luxury, sport utility vehicle (SUV) is the company's entry-level SUV, and has a more car-like ride than the Escalade. It is based on Cadillac's rear-wheel drive Sigma platform on which the new CTS is also built. The platform was developed in Australia by Holden as the Global World Rear Drive (GWRD) platform.

The SRX is available in two trim levels, the V6 (MSRP $37,615, Invoice $35,945) or V8 (MSRP $44,615, Invoice $42,490). The SRX competes with the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, BMW X5, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Equinox, Infiniti FX 35 and 45, Land Rover LR3, Lexus RX 350, Lincoln MKX, Mercedes-Benz M Class, Porsche Cayenne, Saab 9-7x, Volkswagen Touareg2 and the Volvo XC 90. The V6 trim level is equipped with a 255-horsepower, 3.6-liter, V6 engine. The V8 version is equipped with a 320-horsepower, 4.6-liter Cadillac Northstar V8 engine. Both trim levels are available with a rear-wheel drive system. The V6 trim levels comes with 5-speed shiftable automatic transmission, while the V8 trim level has 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission and rear limited slip differential.

The Cadillac SRX is currently in its first generation, and is assembled in Lansing, Michigan. It is scheduled to be replaced in 2009 with either the BRX, or CRX, and share the same platform as the new Saab 9-4x. The SRX won Car and Driver's Five Best Trucks "luxury SUV" award for 2004, 2005 and 2006 and was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2004. [1]

One of the Cadillac SRX's most impressive features is the optional "UltraView" sunroof, which is the largest in the segment. It opens to provide 5.6 square feet (0.52 square meters) of open air over the first- and second-row seats, and includes a glass roof over the third-row of seating. It comes with an integrated power-retractable sunshade. This is a fabulous feature.

The Cadillac SRX has four-wheel independent suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, short and long arm front suspension, and multi-link rear suspension.

Exterior features on the Cadillac SRX are 17 x 7.5" painted alloy wheels, all season tires, and an underbody-mounted, temporary spare tire. It also has variable-intermittent wipers, privacy glass, a rear defogger, and a roof rack. An intermittent rear wiper, a fixed lift-gate window, and a rear power lift-gate door are also standard on this model.

Cadillac SRX instrumentation features include a tachometer, a clock, a trip computer, an external temperature display, a compass, and low fuel level warning indicator.

Seat and trim features in the Cadillac SRX include a five-person total seating capacity, and an eight-way, height-adjustable, power bucket driver's seat. It comes with leather upholstery, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. In the rear, the SRX has a bench seat with a 40-60 split-folding seat-back, rear ventilation ducts, and a folding with storage center armrest.

The Cadillac SRX basic convenience features include cruise control, speed-proportional power steering, and audio controls on the steering wheel. It also has a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, remote engine start, and front, rear, and third row cupholders. This model is equipped with front door pockets, a cargo net, and retained accessory power. Front seat-back storage, power outlets (12V front, 12V rear, and 12V cargo area), cargo tie downs, and a front console with storage are also standard on the SRX.

The Cadillac SRX basic comfort features include an electrochromatic inside rear-view mirror, dual zone climate controls for driver and passenger, and dual illuminating vanity mirrors. It also has front and rear reading lights, front and rear floor mats, and a cargo area light.

Power features in the Cadillac SRX include four one-touch windows, heated mirrors, and remote door locks.

Cadillac SRX entertainment and telematics features include an AM/FM in-dash single CD player stereo, eight Bose premium brand speakers, and a subwoofer. It is also equipped with a diversity antenna, XM satellite radio, and an auxiliary MP3 audio input. A radio data system, hands-free phone, and OnStar with Turn-by-Turn Navigation telecommunications service are also standard on this model.

The Cadillac SRX safety and security features include emergency braking assist, traction control, a four-wheel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), and stability control. It also has front and rear ventilated disc brakes, front and rear head airbags, dual front side-mounted airbags, and passenger airbag occupant-sensing deactivation. This model is equipped with front seatbelt pretensioners, rear door child safety locks, child seat anchors, and a rear center three-point belt. The SRX also has two front multi-adjustable headrests, three rear height-adjustable headrests, an engine immobilizer, a remote anti-theft alarm system, and daytime running lights. Dusk-sensing and auto delay off headlamps, rear parking sensors, tire pressure monitoring, front fog/driving lights, and electronic brake-force distribution are also standard on the Cadillac SRX.

The SRX V8 trim level also has 18 x 8.0" polished alloy wheels, Xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps, and headlamp high-pressure washers. It comes with eight-way, power, multi-level heating driver and front passenger seats with power-adjustable lumbar support. The Cadillac SRX V8 trim level is equipped with an exterior automatic dimming electrochromatic mirror (driver only), a universal remote transmitter, wood trim on dash, doors, and center console, and memorized settings for two drivers (includes settings for the driver's seat and exterior mirror).

A safety and crash test report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that the 2008 Cadillac SRX Four-Door with Side Airbags received four stars out of five in frontal crash tests and five stars out of five in side crash tests. This model received three stars out of five (2-wheel drive) and four stars out of five (4-wheel drive) in rollover tests.

A reliability history report from ConsumerReports.org showed how the Cadillac SRX held up mechanically. The Cadillac SRX V6 trim level received the following ratings for the year 2007 (major redesign year was also 2004): Excellent ratings for its engine, transmission, fuel system, electrical system, climate system, suspension, brakes, exhaust, and paint and trim; Very Good ratings for its drive system, power equipment, and audio system; and Poor ratings for its squeaks and rattles and body hardware trouble spots.

The Cadillac SRX V8 trim level received the following ratings for the year 2005 (major redesign year was also 2004): Excellent ratings for major transmission, engine cooling, and exhaust trouble spots; Very Good ratings for major engine and paint and trim trouble spots; a Good rating for its minor transmission trouble spots; Fair ratings for its minor engine, fuel system, and squeaks and rattles trouble spots; and Poor ratings for its drive system, electrical system, suspension, brakes, body hardware, power equipment, and audio system.
