The 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 is a mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) and happens to be one of our favorite vehicles. It is elegant inside and out, and competent both on the road, and off. The Touareg 2 is available in three trim levels. The Touareg 2 VR6 FSI (MSRP $39,320) comes with a 280-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 engine. The Touareg 2 V8 FSI (MSRP $48,320) comes with a 350-horsepower, 4.2-liter V8 engine. The Touareg 2 V10 TDI (MSRP $68,320) comes with a 310-horsepower, 4.9-liter V10 engine. All three trim levels come with an all-wheel drive system, six-speed Tiptronic manual-shift automatic transmission, front and rear anti-roll bars, four-wheel independent suspension, and can be customized with a variety of packages and accessories.
The Touareg 2 competes with the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Infiniti QX56, Lexus GX 470, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, and Porsche Cayenne. The Touareg 2 is definitely equivalent to a Land Rover Range Rover, for around $30,000 less.
The Volkswagen Touareg, the Touareg 2's predecessor, was first released in 2003. It was the first SUV ever produced by the automaker. It was built on the Volkswagen E platform as a joint project between the German automaker and Porsche, and constructed in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The VW Touraeg is an outstanding 4-wheel drive SUV and the version fitted with 310-horsepower, 5.0-liter, V10 turbodiesel is a fabulous vehicle. The engine is a technological marvel. The sound of all those valves at work is reminiscent of a fired-up Panzer tank. And don't let its pretty looks fool you. The Touareg V10 TDI will "Race to the Clouds" at the 85th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and also take on the, grueling, Baja 500. It's tough.
And we can vouch for the VW Touareg 2's off-road capabilities as we've driven it in Mojab, Utah, and in the mountains off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. We were able to drive anywhere that custom off-road vehicles could go. No problem.
Volkswagen Touareg 2 convenience features include speed control, HomeLink garage door transmitter, residual heat circulation, illuminated and remote keyless entry, telescopic and tilt steering wheel, driver vanity mirror, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and a trip computer. Power features include heated driver and front passenger seats (optional on the Touareg VR6 FSI), moonroof, windows, and trunk release.
Comfort features in the Touareg 2 include split-bench rear seats, leather upholstery (optional on the Touareg VR6 FSI) and steering wheel, genuine wood dashboard, door panel, and console inserts (optional on the Touareg VR6 FSI), adjustable head restraints for the driver and front passenger (rear, with tilt), tachometer, outside temperature display, and a compass. And the entertainment features include AM/FM/Satellite radio, single CD player, six-disc remote CD player, radio data system, ten Dynaudio speakers, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
Basic VW Touareg 2 safety components include traction control, hill hold, vented disc brakes (front and rear), brake assist, occupant sensing airbags, driver and passenger front impact airbags, driver and passenger side impact airbags, overhead airbag, reverse sensing system, headlight cleaning (optional on the Touareg VR6 FSI), rain-sensing and variably intermittent wipers, high-intensity discharge headlights (optional on the Touareg VR6 FSI), and low tire pressure warning indicator. Standard security features include a security system, perimeter/approach lights, and a panic alarm.
Some optional features on all Volkswagen Touareg 2 trim levels are adaptive suspension, rear air conditioning, GPS capability, and heated rear seats.
Among the more innovative technologies in the Touareg 2 is the keyless access system with a transmitter that tracks how close the person holding the fob is to the vehicle and then it unlocks the SUV for you - convenient if your hands are full. And once you are inside the vehicle all you need to do to turn it is on is step on the brake. Another cool option is the four-zone climate control that allows for four different climate/temperature settings within the cabin - one each for the driver, and three of the passengers.
A safety and crash test report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 received five stars out of five in front and side crash tests, and four stars out of five in rollover tests. [1]
