The French automobile manufacturer, Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., is known for its sole vehicle, the Veyron 16.4 coupe. Dubbed the world's most expensive, most powerful, and fastest street-legal car, the 2008 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 (MSRP $1,500,000 - $2,066,000) is equipped with a 1,001-horsepower, 8.0-liter W16 engine, seven-speed shiftable automatic transmission, front and center limited slip and mechanical center differential, and all-wheel drive system. It is priced a lot higher than competing models Aston Martin V12 Vanquish, Ferrari 612 Scaglietti F1A, Ferrari 599, Lamborghini Murcielago, Maybach 62, Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, and the Spyder C 12 Zagato. However it has significantly more horsepower.
The company places emphasis on tradition, stating on its website that it [a Bugatti car] "has always been the epitome of exclusivity, luxury, elegance, style, extraordinary design, and a great passion for automobiles." [1] And we would have to agree that they rank among the most magnificent of automotive designs.
Bugatti's history dates back to 1901, when Ettore Bugatti, a man who was considered to be an "eccentric genius", [2] founded the company. Bugatti is legendary for having produced some of the fastest sports cars in the world. In fact, the company's history is rich with racing success. In the early Grand Prixs, the 1924 Bugatti Type 35 was said to be "probably the most successful racing car of all time with over 2,000 wins including the first Monaco Grand Prix in 1929." [3]
The original company struggled financially with the onset of World War II, as did other high-end brands. There have been two attempts to revive the brand, with the recent effort under the ownership of Volkswagen having been the most successful. Bugatti is now a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, after they purchased the rights to produce vehicles under the brand's name in 1998. Volkswagen returned the brand to the limelight in 2005 with the introduction of the Veyron 16.4.
The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is also equipped with safety and security features, including Xenon high intensity discharge headlamps, four-wheel Antilock Braking System (ABS), stability control, two integrated front headrests, brake assist, panic alarm, driver and passenger front impact airbag (passenger airbag can be turned off), traction control, tire pressure monitoring, electronic brake-force distribution, and turn signal mirrors.
