Founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, by two motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley, the SS Jaguar name first appeared on a 2.5 litre saloon in 1935. [5] The entire company was renamed as Jaguar Cars Limited only in 1945. Jaguar made its name in the 1950s with a series of elegantly-styled sports cars and luxury saloons. [6] It became a part of the Ford Motor Company in 1999, along with the Aston Martin and Volvo Cars, although Aston Martin was sold off in 2007.
A look at Jaguar's reliability ratings showed that the Jaguar XJ Series received the following ratings for the year 2004 (also last major redesign year): Excellent ratings for minor engine, engine cooling, major transmission, and exhaust trouble spots; Very Good ratings for squeaks and rattles, paint and trim, body hardware, minor transmission, and drive, electrical, and audio systems trouble spots; Good ratings for its power equipment and brakes; Fair ratings for its climate system and suspension trouble spots; and a Poor rating for its fuel system.
The 2008 Jaguar XKR Coupe (MSRP $86,700.00) is priced higher than competing model 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class (MSRP $70,075.00), although the XKR has a more powerful engine (420-horsepower, 4.2-liter V8 engine) than the latter (382-horsepower, 5.5-liter V8 engine). Depreciation-wise, however, the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class appears to be more competitive. Case in point, a used 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class (MSRP $64,900) in excellent condition, with a 302-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8 and a 30,000 mileage currently has a Private Party Value of $43,955 and a Suggested Retail Value of $49,190.
