Acura Integra GSR And Type R...Continued
Outstanding cornering response and enhanced braking performance also are a hallmark of this limited edition vehicle. This is made possible by features such as: an overall vehicle weight reduction by 93 pounds (compared to the current Integra GS-R); lower overall vehicle height (by 15 mm compared to the GS-R) and aerodynamic refinements -- such as a chin spoiler, wing-type rear spoiler and body-colored side sills -- that result in 30 percent less lift and 1 percent less drag; lightweight aluminum alloy wheels in Championship White; larger disk brakes with performance-oriented calipers; refined Anti-Lock Braking System.
Suspension is a no-nonsense independent double-wishbone configuration with coil springs and stabilizer bars at both ends, just like most race cars.
Type R's interior also has a distinct racing look and sporty feel with sport-style seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob, a
carbon fiber
-like instrumentation design with amber-colored illumination, a serial number plate on the center console and an exclusive Integra Type R ignition key. It is available exclusively in "Championship White" to commemorate the company's first-ever
Formula One
racing victory by Ritchie Ginther in the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix. Prior to that time only European companies had competed in this prestigious series. They have since entered and dominated not only Formula One, but Indy Car, Showroom Stock sedan and endurance racing Prototype series. The limited edition Type R was developed and tested at Honda's Hokkaido Takasu test track, one of the newest and most challenging test tracks in the world. The track was designed to replicate the toughest corners from some of the world's toughest tracks.
"The Type R exemplifies our dedication to Acura automobiles as 'driver's cars'," said Rich Thomas, Acura executive vice president and general manager. "Its engineering teams included our top Formula One racing veterans, so the dynamic essence of true race cars is carried through every stage of development of the Type R -- the result being a driving experience that can't be equaled for even double the price."
Integras are available in two body styles -- coupe and sedan. The GS-R is now available in both styles, which will satisfy a larger market, while the Type R is only a no-nonsense coupe.
The GS-R starting price will entice many buyers, but most Integras are likely to leave the showrooms with a higher sticker. It is when all the gee-gaws are added that it really shines. It takes little effort to get the final price above $24,000. Acura's high-performance, limited-edition Integra sports coupe -- went on sale last month with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $23,100. There are only a few hundred available each year -- and they will be snapped up quickly.
