1999 Buick Century...Continued

While the marketing folks claim space for six adults, I am happier with two adults in front and three smaller folks in the rear, if needed. Still, the interior is spacious due to careful packaging and long front seat tracks. Ample rear passenger foot room is the result of wide spacing of the front seat tracks. Sculpted front seat backs result in enhanced knee room for rear-seat passengers. Ride and handling has been refined in the Century suspension for 1999. Increased rear shock absorber valving and larger front and rear stabilizer bars reduce body roll.

The four-wheel independent suspension consists of MacPherson struts up front and a new linkage configuration at the rear made up of three struts and coil springs. The Century is equipped with disc and drum brakes, with ABS standard.

Ride quality is the expected soft and compliant over any road surface. Road and suspension noise are absent.

Still, I like stiffer springs and shock absorbers. The body rolls in corners and the suspension rocks after hitting dips in the road. It seems like a small amount of tightening wouldn't detract enough from Century's ride. And the Magnasteer electronic power steering need not eliminate so much steering feel. Still, it seems to be what buyers want, and Iām stating personal preference.

All 1999 Century models may be equipped with the optional GM OnStar system. A hands-free, voice-activated cellular telephone links drivers to a center where advisers provide assistance, such as emergency services and navigation and travel support. OnStar also provides automatic notification of airbag deployment and stolen vehicle tracking.

Another new standard safety feature on all models is a tire inflation monitor. Like all Buicks, Century has Next-Generation dual front air bags with reduced inflation power for occupant protection.

Century represents fine value for buyers shopping in its particular corner of the mid-size market. Century offers a smooth, quiet ride, competent handling and good acceleration performance. It's easy to get in and out; the interior is attractive; and itās user friendly. Thatās what Buick buyers want.
