Chrysler 300M...Continued
Handling: Chrysler developed two handling packages for this vehicle -- one which was originally for America and the other for Europe. Chrysler found through their consumer clinics that there was sufficient interest in the European handling package (Performance Handling Package) to warrant offering both to the American consumer. The suspension originally destined for America is now the base package with the Performance Handling Package as optional.
We recommend purchasing the Performance Handling Package as it costs a mere $255. It is well worth its minimal cost. More than 60% of 300Ms ordered by dealers to date have had the Performance Handling Package so it seems we are not alone in our opinion. The Performance Handling Package includes 16" wheels (down from 17" in the base package), a higher speed rated tire, upgraded externally vented brakes and power steering which offers more resistance and feedback.
The Performance Handling Package will appeal to those considering foreign cars. On the twisting mountain roads of Georgia where we tested the car, it approached each turn with confidence. When cornering at high speeds, the 300M hugged the road and never slipped. This is one of the most satisfying performance sedans ever manufactured on these shores.
Ride: Chrysler was concerned that the Performance Handling Package would have too stiff a ride for American tastes. Chrysler has nothing to fear, the ride is plenty smooth, noise and vibration are minimal and not fatiguing on long trips. 300M is a true sports sedan and when compared to most produced in this country or on foreign shores, it has a ride that pampers. In truth, we found the difference in ride between the two handling packages to be negligible yet the difference in handling was substantial.
What We Liked Most: Styling inside and out. 300M maintains Chrysler's position as the most creative design studio of the "Big Three" automakers. The performance of the engine and chassis makes this one of few, if not the only, luxury sport sedan made in the U.S. to compete with those of European and Japanese manufacturers.
What We Caution You About: In truth little comes to mind. 300M does not have the horsepower of its namesakes of the '50s and '60s but it has more than enough to meet its competition. We'd would however like to see a change in the placement of the stereo controls.
Major Competitors: Lexus ES300, Infiniti I30, Audi A4, Acura TL and Cadillac Catera.
