Ford F-250 Super Duty 4x4 V10
By Aaron Gold
The club-cab F250 Super Duty Ford loaned to me was powered by their
6.8-liter Triton V10, which boasts the same towing capacity as the diesel.
Its dominating dimensions and blistering acceleration quickly earned it
a nickname -- the Testosterone Truck. Stomp on the gas pedal and hold on
to your hat -- the engine wails like hurricane, and the truck takes off
like it's been hit by one. The trade off is the 9.5 mpg I averaged in
mixed driving, compared to a steady 16.5 from the diesel-powered Super
Duty. No doubt the optional 4.30:1
final-drive ratio
contributed both to the truck's rocket-like acceleration and rocket-like fuel economy.
Still, if you're looking for tremendous towing ability and muscle-car
performance from a King Kong-sized truck, the V10-powered Super Duty is
worth a look.
