2002 Dodge Ram...Continued
The center "business console" still can hold a laptop, and now features
fold-down dividers. The center "20" portion of the seat offers
under-cushion storage. Behind the seat, there is a flat load floor for
those working truck needs. On four-wheel drive models, an optional
electronic shift transfer case dial is mounted on the instrument panel.
Air conditioning is standard while heated leather seats are available on
the SLT+ model.
The frame is a completely hydroformed box section, allowing weight
savings that have been used for upgrade features. The frame has been
widened 5 inches for increased torsional rigidity. Correcting a past
weakness, crash energy is taken up with wrinkle indents and holes in
front frame section, protecting occupants better and reducing repair
costs. Class 4 hitch support members are built into standard model while
the bumper is Class 3 hitch capable.
Rack and pinion steering provides a precise and firm steering feel. A
new torsion bar independent front suspension on four-wheel drive models
improves ride quality and quietness. The rear suspension uses lengthened
leaf springs to reduce wheel hop and improve durability.
RAM now features the largest four-wheel disc brakes in the segment,
made possible by standard 17-inch wheels. Massive P275/55R20 tires with
20-inch polished cast aluminum wheels are options. Rear-wheel anti-lock
brakes remain standard with four-wheel ABS as an option.
Dodge further advances truck safety with optional head protecting side
curtains, and pyrotechnic seat belt tensioners. Optional power
adjustable brake and accelerator pedals help shorter drivers feel more
comfortable and makes them safer drivers, plus positioning them better
in the event of air bag deployment.
There is over $1000 in equipment added with no boost in effective
price. Quad cabs are priced about $1900 less than the competition's
super crews, with other models offering a larger bed and interior than
the competition for the same sticker price.
Production takes place at Chrysler Group's Dodge City - Warren Truck
(Warren, Mich.), St. Louis North (Missouri) and Saltillo (Mexico)
Assembly Plants. Production of the current 2500 and 3500 models will
continue for one more model year with all-new versions of the 2500 and
3500 introduced for the 2003 model year. Ram 1500s are in the dealers
after the first of September.
