Valley of Fire, Nevada -- This is almost surreal, like a campy art movie, with dozens of snorting, snarling supercars wending their way through wind-sculpted pinnacles and monuments in this forbidding valley. We are only a few miles outside of Las Vegas where hundreds of Viper owners are enjoying their fifth national conclave. This cruise through a landscape unchanged except by asphalt in thousands of years provides a relief from the overabundance of testosterone.
In fact, one of the Vegas Viper attendees was awarded a certificate by the highway officials attesting to the triple speed limit capability of his Viper. He was also given an escorted tour of some county facilities that few of us get to visit.
We have been teased with the prospects of the sexy Viper GTS Coupe to get into production. Now that the Viper production has moved to a new plant in Detroit they have the flexibility to expand the development area. Obviously, now it is a reality.
Imagine my trepidation driving one of the most potent sports cars on the planet on some of the most challenging roads. Even in the more aggressive driving opportunities, the Viper was up to the designerâs faith. Even when driving hard, I could accommodate some unexpected road changes, and even not ruffle our composure. It is easy to let your right foot get you into trouble, but the car is set up for a slight understeer, and will not do anything stupid if you don't.
