1998 Isuzu Rodeo...Continued
Cargo Space: Space for gear and stuff is not jeopardized should you choose not to have your spare tire located on the rear of your vehicle. The tire doesn't go inside, it's mounted below the cargo area underneath the Rodeo leaving the ample 81.1 cubic feet of cargo space yours to fill however you wish. And the stuff is easy to get at, even with the tire on the back. The spare is mounted on the tail gate, so when it swings open, the tire swings with it. The gate opens easily, to the left, for great curbside access. If you prefer, the Rodeo is also available with a hatchback door that lifts up (for those who choose to have the tire under the vehicle).
Our Impressions Of The Drive:
Engine Response: The test vehicle had the 3.2-liter V6 engine with 205 horsepower. Big power for passing, merging, and other urban necessities as well as negotiating tough off-road trails. The entry level "S" model with 2WD comes with the lesser 2.2-liter 130-horsepower four-cylinder engine. If budget allows, choose the bigger engine. Chugging along in a vehicle designed for sport and utility with no power is no fun.
Shifting The Gears: The Rodeo comes with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The test SUV had an automatic that operated smoothly and accurately. The 4WD high mode is available by a button on the dash for easy accessibility and the 4WD low is engaged by a lever on the floor (Isuzu says that's to satisfy enthusiasts).
Handling: Around town, this SUV handles much like a car. On the highway, it begins feeling truck-like. Off-road, it is a truck. Always, driving the Rodeo is an enjoyable experience.
RIDE: On a nice smooth highway, this vehicle rides smoothly. But off the beaten track, or on urban streets under construction, be prepared to bounce and jostle about. Just hang onto the grab handle and enjoy the ride.
What We Liked Most: In a world full of truck-pretenders, the Rodeo is the epitome of a sport utility vehicle. It's truck-like, yet with its new contemporary appearance, this vehicle looks as good at the country club as it does at the country bar.
What We Caution You About: The Rodeo's price range is extremely wide. Remember, as in most everything, you get what you pay for.
Overall Impression: It's the real thing.
Major Competition: Chevrolet Blazer, Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota 4Runner
