1998 Lexus LX 470...Continued

Our Impressions Of The Drive:

Engine Response: The huge 4.7-liter V8 engine moves the big SUV down the road with plenty of confidence for two-lane passing and hill climbing. The full-time four-wheel-drive system offers fun off-roading capabilities and all-weather driving assurance. You're literally ready for anything in this powerful SUV.

Shifting The Gears: The four-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission moves as smoothly between gears as the Lexus sedan siblings.

Handling: On-road the full-size SUV handles much like a big, luxury car. Off-road, the vehicle is capable of challenges attempted by even the most adventurous. The press corps took advantage of some of those opportunities on the beautiful trails outside of Palm Springs during a media event featuring both the RX 300 and the LX 470. No problems, just fun times. The Adjustable Height Control (AHC) system on the big SUV is a real treat both for entering and exiting the vehicle and for off-roading. Ride-height adjustments, ranging nearly four inches, afford a lowered height for easier entry and exit and the option of higher ride-height for off-road ground clearance.

Ride: Although the LX 470 ride is nearly as pleasant as a sedan ride, this is a truck-like hybrid SUV. Still, this heavy vehicle provides an extremely comfortable cruise on highways and byways in a luxurious "sitting."

Brakes: Four-wheel disc brakes accompanied by an anti-lock braking system offer safe, secure stopping.

Fit And Finish: Not a ripple in the finish nor an edge that does not match on this fine sport utility vehicle.

What We Liked Most: The big, powerful V8 engine and the luxurious appointments.

What We Caution You About: This is a big vehicle. Although it's designed to fit in the "typical two-car garage," check it out in yours before committing to purchase. This is an this expensive SUV, and you'll want to be sure it has a secure home.

Overall Impression: With the LX 470, Lexus offers a high quality sport utility vehicle in an increasingly competitive arena.

Major Competition: Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator
