2000 Mazda MPV Versatility For Families And Empty-Nesters At An Affordable Price
By Joanne Brickman
History: Mazda entered the minivan arena with the 1989 MPV (Multi-Purpose
Vehicle), a vehicle that set itself apart from the then-fast-growing number
of favored family movers with unique features like a hinged rear
passenger-side door and available four-wheel drive. In 1996, the MPV got a
new look along with a rear driver's side door and additional seating
options. The 1997 model year brought the All-Sport MPV with a rugged look
and off-road possibilities, closely imitating the SUV, America's new
vehicle-of-choice. Unfortunately for Mazda, buyers were more interested in
the real thing and their sales suffered. Undaunted, Mazda is presenting an
all-new minivan for the year 2000. Only the name is the same on this
innovative new MPV. Unique features include roll-down windows on dual
sliding rear doors, second-row seating that changes from captain chairs to
bench at passenger's whim, and third-row seating that can be flipped to
offer tailgate seating at outdoor events. It appears Mazda is back and
serious about offering an interesting, practical, and affordable way to
transport families and friends.
