2000 Mazda MPV...Continued
Passenger Comfort: Dual sliding doors offer easy entry to the passenger
compartment. No power doors, though. Mazda says customers haven't been
happy with the slow-moving power doors, so they opted for slick sliders and
added power-down windows (an option -- base windows are roll-down) on the
doors. While windows drop down only half-way, they're a refreshing
improvement over the unmovable ones on the competition. Removable second
row "Side-by-Slide" seats, included on LX and ES models, can become either
captain's chairs or bench seat by simply pulling on a lever that moves them
side to side. And you can do this while sitting on them! Leather-trimmed
upholstery on the ES and optional rear air conditioning bring further
comfort to those enjoying a ride in the new MPV.
Cargo Space: Behind the third-row seat is a deep well in the floor
providing 17.2 cubic feet of storage space. With the "Tumble-Under" third
row seats folded into this space, room for cargo in the interior is
increased to about 54 cubic feet. Turn the people hauler into an impressive
cargo hauler by removing the light-weight second-row seats and tucking the
third-row seats into the floor. This configuration provides 127 cubic feet
of space for a trip to the home improvement store or to accommodate
treasures found on an antique hunt. Storage needs for a trip cross country
or across town include ten cupholders, nine built-in storage compartments
for front seat occupants, a covered storage bin on the left rear seat
armrest, and a large middle-row seatback pocket.
Our Impressions Of The Drive:
Engine Response: While it will never be mistaken for a performance sedan,
the 170-horsepower MPV proved more than adequate enthusiasm over the hills
and dales of the southern California ride and drive route.
Shifting The Gears: The shifter is on the steering wheel column of the new
MPV. This may sound dull, but it's not. Besides, it leaves more room on
the front seat floor.
Handling: There's surprisingly good rapport between driver and the road in
this vehicle. Steering is responsive and its sporty handling makes one
forget its a minivan.
