1998 Mercedes ML320...Continued
Option package M1 includes leather seats, walnut dashboard, console and trim, heated 8-way power seats, lockable storage bin, and other small convenience items.
Package M4 carries a rather "macho" feel with bright stainless steel spare tire carrier and running boards, as well as molded front and rear mudflaps.
Driving Impressions:
With a low step-in of only 18.5 inches, you almost forget you're climbing into a sport utility vehicle. Once inside, you're transported into the cockpit of an E-Class
sedan
Backseat passengers were delighted to find bench seating with three individual fold down seat backs and adjustable head rests.
The cargo area, even with the second row of seats in use, provided enormous storage space. We found room for 19 paper grocery bags with the seats up and 39 with the seats down. In comparison, the Jeep Grand Cherokee held 13 and 28 respectively.
Our test vehicle, presented with the M1 option package, bathed us in the luxury of leather and walnut, while performing aggressively enough to tackle the roughest and steepest backroads in northern Alabama.
The ML320 utilizes Mercedes-Benz's 4ETS full-time four-wheel drive
traction control system
called 4ETS. The 4ETS senses when one wheel spins faster than the others and automatically brakes the slipping wheel or wheels until the revolutions match the slowest wheel. According to Mercedes, 4ETS works even if three wheels lose
traction
. We tested this on slick, rutted roads and were amazed at the recovery. We have confidence in Mercedes and their unique traction control system.
Overall Impression:
The ML320 would be a wonderful addition to anyone's garage. Whether your primary purpose was replacing a luxury sedan or adding a truck-type vehicle to your small fleet, the M-Class SUV fits the bill. Excellent ride and handling, quiet and comfortable, yet rugged if needed -- we found this to be the perfect all-purpose luxury vehicle.
Too small? Not enough power? The 1999 version will have a seven-passenger seating option to compete with the minivan market along with a
4.3-liter
V8 engine. Good things come to those who wait!
