1998 Mercedes Benz C43...continued

C-Class is comprised of three models: The C220 uses a 148-horsepower, 2.2-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while the C280 is powered by a 194-horsepower, 2.8-liter inline six-cylinder engine . The previous limited-production, high-performance C36 used a special 3.6-liter, 268-horsepower inline six, and the new C43 ups that ante. Only about 500 of these AMG-modified super sedans will be imported to the United States each year.

A four-speed automatic transmission is standard for all standard C-Class models, and so are dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes. While the C43 five-speed has adaptive electronics, and modifies its shifting patterns quickly to the driver's style, I would have preferred a selector shift such as offered by performance models from Porsche, BMW, Lexus and even Chrysler. The C43 shift lever can be notched into position to choose a gear, but it is not as convenient or error free as those other schemes.

The standard remote-entry system uses a single infrared sensor, located in the rear-view mirror, and the transmitter includes a trunk-lid release. Attempted theft disables the engine management system, so the car cannot be started.

Power windows, central locking and cruise control are also standard on all models. All seat belts now have a lockable reel mechanism to provide firm restraint for a child seat.

Option packages have been reconfigured to offer more value to buyers. Traction control Electronic Traction System (ETS) for the C220 and Automatic Slip Control (ASR) for the C280 and C43 is included in a package that also comes with headlight washers/wipers and heated front seats.

All Mercedes-Benz models come with a four-year/50,000-mile warranty, which includes tires, batteries and adjustments for the full coverage period. In addition, all Mercedes cars, regardless of model year, are covered by the 24-hour Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance program.
