Dodge/Plymouth Neon
By Bob Storck
The addition of a twin-cam engine and a coupe body enhances the Neon's performance image. Racing results solidify sporty image in an economy segment. Now Chrysler is providing more identity to its brands by equipping special models of the Dodge Neons with performance options, while the Plymouths get a style and luxury treatment.
Neon uses the LH trick of pushing the wheels to the edges of the car to enlarge the interior while keeping the outside small. It has a longer wheelbase than Escort, Saturn or Civic, yet is about the same length and slightly lighter.
The result is a car that handles well and which is stable on the highway as well as being sprightly in traffic. It is a pleasure to drive an economy car that is not an adventure on freeway on-ramps. There is real room for four persons to travel without getting more intimate than desired.
An active competition program has enhanced the Neon's reputation. Its major on track competitor is the Mazda Miata!
The Neon engine is the most powerful in the class. Yet the 132 hp engine emphasizes smoothness and durability rather than power, and now there is a twin-cam Sport option which adds about 35 hp.
It will be replaced this year by a completely new model, keeping the same spirit.
