2000 Dodge Neon
By Bob Storck
The completely reworked Neon uses the LH trick of pushing the wheels to
the edges of the car to enlarge the interior while keeping the outside
small. It has a longer wheelbase than Escort, Saturn or Civic, yet is
about the same length and slightly lighter.
The result is a car that handles well and which is stable on the
highway as well as being sprightly in traffic. It is a pleasure to drive
an economy car that is not an adventure on freeway on-ramps. There is
real room for four persons to travel without getting more intimate than
desired.
The mid-2000 addition of a 150 hp and a R/T coupe body enhances the
Neon's performance image. Racing results solidify sporty image in an
economy segment.
An active competition program has enhanced the Neon's reputation.
Unfortunately the national sports car club has undermined the car with
unfavorable rulings, and Dodge is withdrawing is Neon support in favor
of NASCAR.
The Neon engine is the most powerful in the class. Yet the 132 hp
engine emphasizes smoothness and durability rather than power.
