2000 Ford Focus
By Bob Storck
European roads are narrow and parking spots tight. If you can't make
your vehicle longer, make it taller, adopt chairlike seating, and
provide more interior space -about as much as Mondeo/Contour/Mystique.
The 3 inch taller overall height of the Focus is the most notable
difference from Escort. Ford has made plans to de-emphasize Contour and
Escort sales in the U.S.
Ford's newest small car comes here after winning the prestigious
European Car of the Year award. Focus will set the trend toward cars
that are taller and more people oriented. Teenagers will find the zippy
three-door ZX3 model appealing. Four door sedans and five door wagons
will make families happy.
The Ford Focus has a fully independent rear suspension, and a stiff,
light body structure. In Europe there is a Cosworth version with all
wheel drive and loads of horsepower that is excelling in the world rally
championship.
There is little difference in price between the two four cylinder
engines. (Hint - Go for the 130 hp version!)
Among specialty marketing ploys look at the youth oriented Sports and
Friend's Packages and lots of folks will find the Pet Package ideal for
their full family needs. there is also a versatile Professional Package
with work related options that some of us will have to order.
