2000 Honda Civic
By Bob Storck
The rest of the world is catching up to Honda in the compact segment,
and this is the last year for the old reliable Civic.
All Civics are the same from the windshield forward, all essentially
similar, but clever packaging creates a whole variety of models. Engine
choices have been simplified, and there is a continuously variable
automatic that maximizes acceleration and economy at the same time. It
takes some getting used to, not feeling the shift points. An additional
feature is that the clutch is downstream of the transmission, allowing
it to be towed behind motorhomes without fear of damage. There is power
available for those who want it and economy available for those who
worship mpg.
The interior maximizes front seat room, and while the rear seats are
usable, it is at the expense of front comfort. Switches and controls
have that expensive feel that Honda has mastered, and gauges are visible
throughout the steering wheel movement.
The Civic and Accord Station Wagons are history -- Honda hopes those
buyers will move up to CR-Vs, Passports or Odysseys.
