2000 Subaru Impreza
By Bob Storck
Subaru has answered the need for a vehicle with room for four people,
good storage, and the ability to get around in treacherous conditions at
a good price with the thrifty Impreza. Its all-wheel drive provides
safety in all conditions and the sporty RS versions and rugged Outback
Sports offer something for everyone.
The thing that set Subaru off from the competition was their affordable
four-wheel drive vehicle. Rural American roads are filled with 20 year
old Subarus - maybe not pretty, but still running.
The interior style and creature comforts have impressed people
attracted to the car due to its reputation for durability. The favorable
impression is reinforced when the engine is started, as the unique,
water-cooled flat four-cylinder engine is smooth and vibration free.
Most come with the 2.2 liter 142 hp engine, but the RS gets high
velocity urging from the 165 hp 2.5 from the Legacy.
The Impreza is bred from the Legacy line, and uses a shortened version
of that car's platform. It retains the big car ride, and with the
smaller and lighter configuration, the Impreza has nimble handling.
