2000 Chevrolet/GMC S-Series And Isuzu Hombre
By Bob Storck
Initially these were sold as just as Chevy S10s and GMC Sonomas, but
they are also offered through Isuzu as Hombres, rewarding their long
time partner.
There are two choices of cab configurations and cargo bed lengths. They
are wide enough to accommodate 4X8 panels, but lack the length. The
interior is well appointed, and a third door helps but they are lagging
behind the competition that offers several four door configurations.
The 2.2 four cylinder engine appeals to those who cannot afford the V6,
and it has amazing low down torque, and will beat the small six off the
line. The Vortec balance-shaft V6 is powerful, with a stiff, strong and
quiet block.
A HydraMatic 4L60-E four-speed automatic complements the manual
five-speed. Four-wheel options include a floor mounted transfer case
shifter, or a two-speed electronic controlled version on the LS. Both
have the Insta-Trac "shift-on-the-fly" system.
Chevy has an Xtreme high performance package, and a ZR2 off road
package, which has flared fenders to accommodate 31X10.5R-15 all-terrain
tires. An electric S-truck is available but is limited to short distance
commercial uses.
