2000 Dodge Durango
By Bob Storck
Dodge's Durango has been compared to everything from Explorers to Range
Rovers, but defies a precise comparison with anything currently
available on the market. It is built on the mid-size Dakota chassis, and
with two V8s Durango has more power and cargo capability than anything
in the class.
Dodge engineers widened the frame in the passenger area, allowing more
people space. The third seat is surprisingly spacious. The lower floor
pan and raised roof allows an additional four inches that normally would
not be there if only Dakota components were used.
Durango comes with either bucket seats or a 40-20-40 front seat; a
configuration pioneered by the full size RAM. A similar configuration
with fold and tumble outboard sections in the second row allows easy
access to the rear, far better than larger Expedition or Suburban third
seats. Eight occupants are possible.
In the power department, Durango's base engine is now the 235 hp 4.7
liter aluminum V8, and adds a 245 hp, 5.9 liter V8, and a thrifty V6
option. With the high torque big engine, it will manage a 7,000 lb tow
capacity and an 1,800 lb payload.
