2000 Mercedes ML320/ML430/ML55
By Bob Storck
With BMW, Audi and even Porsche ready to offer sporty utes, the Daimler
guys called on their AMG department to roll out a killer ML55 version
with half again more horsepower and all the bells and whistles, albeit
at almost double the cost of the base V6.
MB used a frame and body construction, but ride, and handling, are more
sports car than sport ute. The V8 engine adds to the exclusivity and
towing power. Since it uses the same basic block, there was no problem
getting it to fit.
The ML has high- and low-range transfer cases for true off-road
capability. A combination of traction control and anti-lock brakes
eliminates the need for locking differentials. Low range allows the ML
to climb all grades up to at least 45 degrees. There is no over-run in
the automatic transmission, so engine braking on slopes insures sure
footed travel.
A convenient swing up tailgate provides access to cargo or the optional
folding seats. Door-mounted side impact airbags are incorporated to
protect front and rear seat occupants in side collisions. A third row
seat is optional, and this year a video navigation system comes with the
V8s and is available with the V6 models.
