Subaru Legacy Outback
By Bob Storck
The problem with most truck based SUVs is that they are tall, and
rougher riding, despite all the attention of the suspension engineers.
Subaru has a different solution, and it is spacious and affordable. The
Outback version is doing a good job, with a raised roof, added ground
clearance, fog lights and a Paul Hogan commercial. Taller tires are
supported by more capable suspension, and when off road, the drive train
is smoother than most truck versions.
AWD is now standard on all US Subarus. Traction control is available,
and it uses the engine management system and brakes to maintain optimal
thrust to the driving wheels. If traction is lost at either end, a
center viscous coupling shifts power to the axle with traction.
This is a car that thrives on an attitude of dependability. Now that it
is established, the Outback Limited gets optional twin moonroofs,
upgraded audio and a leather package. New alloy wheels, longer
splashguards, and a revised overhead console distinguish the newer
Outbacks.
The only wagon that sells more units than Legacy is the Escort, and
that may not be true soon. All Legacys sold here are built in the
Lafayette, IN plant that Subaru shares with Isuzu.
