Toyota 4-Runner
By Bob Storck
Credit Toyota for the impressive rebirth of 4Runner, which stands out
in this new third generation design with unique sleek-but-strong
external styling. 4Runner is ripe for rough treatment. The 4Runner name
combines 4-wheel drive and off-road runner.
In 4x4 mode, 4Runner stands high and looks aggressive, and it truly can
scramble over woodland rip rap rock or take on the creek beds or
mountain slopes or desert dunes, but that capability comes at the
expense of ride and access. Despite the rugged outward appearance,
4Runner forms an interior nest that is comfortable and user-friendly
although the seats are somewhat stiff for many tastes. In addition to
extending the chassis, more cross braces were added at key points, which
stiffen the platform to maintain more stability when steering and also
allow more precise movement of suspension components to generate a
smoother ride quality. In the power department, a base 2.7-liter
4-in-line engine has been beefed up, but the optional V6 works best when
4Runner pulls a trailer or heads off-road. This year it gets matched
with a full time 4WD system.
The SR5 package adds exterior trim elements and inside power for locks
and mirrors, plus a tilt steering wheel. Ultimate Limited gets bigger
tires on aluminum alloy wheels, running boards and fender flares,
leather and wood trimmings, and those limo-like extras.
