2000 Toyota Echo

A lot of cars coming on the market will get taller and less sleek, pleasing those inside more than those outside. ECHO is just among the first of many. The exterior styling leaves some cold, but the tall three box design provides excellent strength and interior space.

The interior is marked by numerous and generous storage cubbyholes. The two upgrade packages are oriented toward sports and convenience, but exclude some items that are bound to be added such as air conditioning and power steering. While the base models list under $10K, don't expect any to sell at that price with the convenience demands of the domestic buyers. There are no significant shared components with the Tercel or Corolla. ECHO uses a 1.5 liter VVT-i variable-valve timing engine that is combined with a low curb weight to get it EPA-certified as a low-emission vehicle (LEV).

Toyota needs to spiff up their image with the Gen X and Y folks. Honda Civics are the current rage of young boy racers and Toyotas aren't. Toyota Racing Development can come to the rescue, and should be building hop up parts for all their cars.
