2000 Chevrolet Silverado/ GMC Sierra
By Bob Storck
The long awaited Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra have finally
arrived and are worth the wait, but the expected full range of models
has been slow in coming. This year we will finally get four doors, but
still only the rear hinged versions. By adapting the architecture of the
aluminum engine developed for the Corvette into cast iron, new 4.8, 5.3
and 6.0 liter V8 engines are thriftier and this year, even more
powerful. To complete the full range of engines they still offer the V6
and soon will have an Isuzu developed diesel option.
The greatest advantage GM maintains is their powerful and versatile
engines. Vortec technology is no single area of improvement, but careful
attention to every aspect of the engine. The result is the most powerful
family per displacement in the industry. It is the first large pickup
with standard four-wheel disc brakes and ABS, welcome safety features.
With a stiffened frame, new styling and extra attention paid to the cab
interior, virtually only the brand name is carried over. GM has
completely reworked the interior, especially the rear seats and
controls. While the production plants are catching up, some will still
produce the current version.
The true 4-door crew cab is still available on the heavier duty old
generation GM trucks that will continue to be sold this year.
