2000 Ford Super Duty F-250-550
By Bob Storck
Ford has developed their Super Duty products for those people who NEED a TRUCK!
They have found that over 1/3 of these muscle bound trucks were being
used for recreational use - mostly hauling travel or horse trailers. Now
Ford is offering the upscale XLT and Lariat frills in all their
products, all the way up to the ten ton gross vehicle weight (GVW) F-550
haulers.
To further address these flexible requirements, the four-door Crew Cab
is available in all four Super Duty models, and the three-door Super Cab
is part of the F-250 and F-350 lineup. Pickups or Chassis Cabs are
available as Regular Cab, SuperCab, or Crew Cab models, as well as a
Motor Home Chassis.
Front end styling is greatly different from the light duty F-Trucks,
largely to supply enough air to the heavy duty engines. Super Duty
F-Series trucks feature new 5.4-liter Triton V-8 and 6.8-liter Triton
V-10 engines and an improved intercooled 7.3-liter diesel engine (with a
whopping 500 lb ft of torque). Commercial users will appreciate the
4R100 four speed automatic transmission, which now has a power takeoff
for auxiliary drives or hydraulic pumps.
F-650/750
Ford's Super Duty F-Series family became complete in 1999, with the
introduction of the 2000-model-year Ford Super Duty F-650 and F-750. The
two new Ford commercial trucks are offered in weight Classes 6 and 7
resulting in Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings up to 33,000 pounds. Both
trucks are available as straight trucks, in multiple wheelbases ranging
from 158 to 260 inches, and Ford becomes the only Class 6 and 7
manufacturer in the industry to offer a four-door SuperCab model.
Engine families for the all-new Ford trucks include the Cummins 5.9L
ISB diesel, the Cat 3126E diesel and the Ford 7.3-liter Power Stroke
diesel, coupled with Eaton, Spicer or Allison transmissions.
