2000 Ford Expedition
By Bob Storck
Expedition is aimed at the affluent consumer, who wants the comfort and
capability that the extra 15 inch length offers over Explorer. It is
longer than Tahoe/Yukon, and shorter than Suburban, but can still be
parked in most garages. Most of the interior is devoted to people. An
optional removable seat allows three small and flexible persons in back.
Now power adjustable pedals help smaller people to drive the Expedition
safely and comfortably.
Expedition uses the F-150 platform but unique front doors. This gives
equal benefit to front and rear passengers. 2000 models get side air
bags in the rear and a back up sensor.
The frame is boxed for stiffness and noise reduction. The rear
suspension is totally different from the trucks, with emphasis on ride
and load leveling. Four drive selections are controlled from a selector
switch on the dash. A center differential lock is available. Ford's 4.6
liter and 5.4 liter modular engines have been uprated and are mated to
4-speed automatic transmissions.
It has two versions, XLT and Eddie Bauer. An Anti-theft system is
standard, and side mirrors have bright arrows that flash with the turn
signals,. Optional running boards have lights that illuminate steps.
Four wheel ABS discs are standard. Optional air suspension makes the
Expedition drive like a different vehicle, handling ruts and washboard
surfaces smoothly.
