2000 Lexus LX470
By Bob Storck
The leading Japanese company was not content to let others capitalize
on this market and the LX has been a hit. To the proficient Land Cruiser
designers added hardware and soft interior comforts to make the V8
powered LX 470 ride and feel more like a Lexus. The upscale Lex-ute
scores at the head of all polls measuring passenger comfort and owner
satisfaction. Transformation from Land Cruiser to LX 470 begins on the
outside and continues through suspension enhancements and added
insulation to a variety of fine interior appointments.
Buyers responded with enthusiasm, and sales far exceeded projections,
cutting into those of the better established Range Rovers.
For the exterior, the Lexus nose looks different due to the headlamp
treatment with front cornering lamps and a unique grille. Its classy
external design enables the Lexus to stand out in a crowd of cars, not
only from the tall stance but a visual attitude that seems strong and
muscular.
To complete the mechanical package, LX 470 gets a welcome anti skid
system, one of the best safety features introduced in this decade. A
variable height suspension package is offered. Options have been limited
to a power moonroof, 6-disc CD changer for center console, tow gear and
cellular phone.
