2000 Mitsubishi Montero
By Bob Storck
Over the last decade Montero has evolved from one of the least
expensive to the opposite end of the sport utility market. The change
was gradual, but it remains distinctive. They are relying on marketing
packages such as the Endeavor edition that picks up just about all the
luxo-options to create interest.
All Monteros now come with the 3.5 liter V6 twin cam engine. The
automatic transmission has a hold feature that keeps the transmission in
higher gears in slippery conditions. This provides all models with 200
hp and a healthy 228 ft/lb. of torque.
At the same time, the standard center-locking differential added to an
electro-pneumatically operated rear locking differential makes the
Montero one of the more capable off-roaders. Its Active Trac AWD system
is complemented by an off road 4WD system designed for the toughest
conditions.
The side-hinged rear door gives easy access to the extra-large storage
area that accommodates additional seating to accommodate seven people.
The rear seats fold out of the way and have full harness.
Montero is one of the oldest designs on the market and gets a complete
redesign this coming year.
