2000 BMW 7-Series
By Bob Storck
BMW's flagship luxury sedan has been around since the mid-80s, and
while introduced with straight sixes, now it relies on V8s and V12s. A
4.4-liter 282-horsepower V8 engine powers the 740s, while the super
luxury 750iL gets a 5.4-liter 326-horsepower V12. Smooth and powerful,
both engines now qualify for Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) status.
There are three 4-door versions -- the 740i, the 740iL and the 750iL
sedans. The L models have a longer wheelbase for more rear seat room.
The 740i is now available with a sport package and several levels of
armor plating are available, engineered and installed at the factory.
The 7-Series was one of the first to offer increased airbag protection
for both front and rear-seat occupants. Rear door-mounted side-impact
airbags are available. BMW's Head Protection System features an
inflatable tube that deploys from headliner to provide head protection.
Standard features include all the usual amenities and now all models
come with a stability system, a GPS navigation system, xenon headlights,
a premium stereo with CD changer, plus the 740 can be ordered with the
massaging front seats.
