2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By Bob Storck
Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan succeeds the best-selling model in company
history. A striking, four-headlight "face" and a coupe-like silhouette
immediately set the car apart from its predecessor. The E-Class is
slightly larger than the previous model, with gains in head, leg and
shoulder room.
E-Class models include the E320, which uses a 3.2-liter V6 engine and
the E430 is powered by a new 4.3-liter double overhead-cam V8. The E300
Diesel has been dropped. Traction control and the ESP skid program is
included as standard equipment on all E-Class models. It calculates
every microsecond if the car is going in the direction it is being
steered. If there's the slightest difference, the system corrects by
applying one of the car's left or right-side brakes.
The Mercedes-Benz E320 sedan and wagon offer a new all-wheel-drive
option. This full-time system uses a 35/65 front-rear torque split and
requires no driver intervention. The wagon offers a rear facing seat,
increasing capacity to seven.
Easy-to-read analog gauges convey vital information. Front seats are
similar to those used in the S-Class, and multi-contour front seats are
optional. Leather upholstery is standard. The instrument panel and door
panels are trimmed with genuine burl walnut.
