2000 Mitsubishi Galant
By Bob Storck
Another rework just makes a good car better. As capable as the Galant
was, this longer, wider version finally has the long awaited 195hp V6.
Suspension tuning and tire choices have been moderated to keep it from
appealing to too small a segment. The independent suspension delivers
both ride and handling, and a GTZ model will appeal to those wanting a
little bit more pizzazz.
The direction has been shifted from gee-whiz to class. The Galant has
always been a solid product, with a few flaws and quirks that probably
affected its sales. The fact that it's built in the US can't hurt.
An indication of the refinement in the chassis and suspension is that
it is used in different lengths and configurations for such exotic cars
as the Chrysler Sebring, the Dodge Stealth and Avenger, the Eagle Talon,
and the Mitsubishi Eclipse. They are all built at the Diamond Star plant
in Normal, IL.
Mitsubishi has cast aside the flashier aspects of its technology, and
put the techno-nerds to work on details such as variable assist steering
and a "fuzzy-logic" electronically controlled four speed automatic
transmission.
Dual airbags have been accommodated while leaving room for a large
glove box. Side bags are optional.
