2000 Toyota Camry
By Bob Storck
With a whole bunch of new models occupying Toyota's attention, Camry
just gets minor changes to the grille and tail lights, plus a few more
horses in the four cylinder version. This fourth generation Camry is
quieter, lighter and more powerful. Toyota has placed their emphasis on
simplicity and parts reduction, yet Camry offers better ride quality and
improved handling.
Camry has been the best selling car in the US the last couple years,
and shows no sign of slipping in the sales race. Approximately 80
percent of the Camrys sold in the U.S. are built here.
The Camry is offered exclusively as a four-door sedan in CE, LE and XLE
trim levels. slow selling coupes and station wagons were dropped from
the lineup in the last redesign, but the new Solara got a Camry name,
possibly to help gild the sales totals. Despite an additional two inches
of wheelbase, the new Camry features shorter front and rear overhang.
The standard 2.2 liter four-cylinder now produces 136 horsepower, while
V6 output is adequate at 194. A five-speed manual transmission is
available in the CE trim level with both four-cylinder and V6 engines.
